(AUSTIN) - Today, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Joe Straus announced the appointment of Representative Ed Thompson (R-Pearland) to the Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System, pursuant to Senate Bill 695 that was passed during the 84th Legislative Session.
"We will be closely studying the concept of a coastal barrier system in Texas with the goal of finding a workable solution to prevent storm surge damage to our ports and beaches, as well as our coastal industry and property," Thompson said. "As a member of the coastal delegation, I am honored to serve on a Joint Committee that is crucial to the success of the entire state. Over a third of the real gross product of our state comes from the Texas coast, so it's imperative that we protect it."
The Joint Committee will meet throughout the interim, and will report their findings and recommendations prior to November 1, 2016 for the review of the 85th Legislature.
