Rep. Ed Thompson and Texas House Conclude Successful 84th Legislature
Austin, TEXAS – On Monday afternoon the Texas Legislature moved to adjourn Sine Die, concluding the 84th Legislative Session. Representative Ed Thompson completed his Sophomore term serving District 29 in a session that successfully cut taxes, improved education efforts, funded our transportation system, increased border security, and protected Texans’ Second Amendment rights.
The House of Representatives fought to pass a conservative state budget, House Bill 1, the single piece of legislation that must pass each session, as required by the Texas Constitution. This $209 billion amount stays below the constitutional spending limit and leaves more than $11 billion in the Rainy Day Fund. The measure was agreed upon by both the House and the Senate, and is currently headed to Governor Abbott’s desk for final approval. Additionally, the Legislature delivered nearly $4 billion in tax relief through a twenty-five percent reduction in the business margins tax and a $10,000 increase in the homestead exemption.
“I am very proud of the many successes of this legislative session,” Thompson said. “In addition to our accomplishments with the state budget, tax cuts, border security, and transportation, I am pleased to have passed several beneficial bills for the people of District 29 and for the State of Texas.”
Other successes of the 84th Texas Legislature include the full funding of the health insurance program for retired public school employees, TRS-Care, passing licensed open carry gun legislation, reducing the role of standardized testing in public schools, strengthening pre-kindergarten programs, increasing state budget transparency, and the passage of several pro-life measures.
“It has been an honor to work alongside my colleagues on the Environmental Regulation Committee and the Land & Resource Management Committee; I am grateful to have had such hard-working members by my side to pass responsible legislation focused on the well-being of all Texans,” stated Thompson.
